Rhine Valley

Rhine Valley

The Rhine Valley is storybook Germany, a fairy-tale world of legends and robber-baron castles. Cruise the most castle-studded stretch of the romantic Rhine as you listen for the song of the treacherous Loreley. For hands-on thrills, climb through the Rhineland's greatest castle, Rheinfels, above the town of St. Goar. Castle connoisseurs will also enjoy the fine interior of Marksburg Castle. Spend your nights in a castle-crowned village, either Bacharach or St. Goar.

Black Forest

Combine Edenism and hedonism as you explore this most romantic of German regions and dip into its mineral spas. The Black Forest ("Schwarzwald" in German) so named because its thick forests allowed little light in was long cut off from the German mainstream. The poor farmland drove medieval locals to become foresters, glassblowers, and clockmakers. Today, the Black Forest offers clean air, cuckoo clocks, cheery villages, and countless hiking possibilities. This is where Germans come to recuperate from their hectic workaday lives, as well as from medical ailments. The region is also known for its favorite dessert, Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte  Black Forest cake, a mouthwatering concoction with alternating layers of schnapps-soaked chocolate cake, cherries, and whipped cream. The region's two major towns are Baden-Baden Germany's grandest 19th-century spa resort and Freiburg, the Black Forest's de facto capital and main university town. For a small-town experience, hang your hat in cozy Staufen.

Würzburg

A historic mid-sized city, Würzburg isn't quite charming (thanks to its unmistakable post-WWII-rebuild vibe), but it's worth a stop to see its impressive prince-bishop's Residenz, one of Germany's most enjoyable to tour. Surrounded by vineyards and filled with atmospheric wine bars, this tourist-friendly town is easy to navigate by foot or streetcar. Today, 25,000 of its 130,000 residents are students making the town feel young and very alive.
